IN AN ANAXAMANDREAN APEIRON (*) (*) THE INDEFINITE

At the first wailing of the stars,

torment penetrates the stillness

and inlays the soul

with gems of fable.

Prorompent,

sudden,

from the waves of time,

devoid of gravity,

emerges the ballast of life

and my poems without an audience

are resting on the wings

of a plea for love.

They are the Fates,

Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos;

they regulate the "thread" of my life.

Clotho spins the wool,

Lachesis winds the yarn,

Atropos cuts it,

thus determining

my birth,

my life,

my death.

They are

the symphony of my life,

a harmony basted

of faceless figures,

of myriads of poems,

ferine,

anchoritic,

harbingers of pulsating anguish,

among the glare of a gray,

chilly December.

No soul does not have

an Elysium toward which to soar

at the first warmth of dawn.

No soul does not have

an Elysium toward which to glide

at the first gasps of the evening.

All lovers

make great oaths

for the future.

All lovers

have droves of chimeras

who long for the freedom

of white seagulls.

The torment,

the excruciating torment,

imposed on me the altar of myself,

and so, I genuflected myself before God,

before Humanity,

like a humble ascetic

and I experienced

the sublimation of Being.

I plumbed

the meanders of my stillness,

hoping to find the truth there,

but only I found

diamonds of pain.

And meanwhile

from the sky descended

pearls of dew

to sprinkle,

to nourish

the winter roses

of my soul.

I even felt affection

for the Fates

who have chiseled

this earthly path of mine,

for this did not involve

gilded prisons that,

minute by minute,

disguised,

vainly

seduced my heart

toward the opacity of dazzling light.

The moon still sleeps.

An old question,

unsolved,

atrociously tormenting me:

why,

what is the use,

ideally to fly

in the nocturnal cosmos,

in an anaximandrian Apeiron?

** " Principle of beings is infinity,

from where, indeed, beings originate,

there they also have destruction according to necessity:

For they pay one another

the penalty and atonement of injustice

according to the order of time."
