Spring is in the air

“Spring is in the air,” said Baseball Coach.

“Robins are performing their beautiful symphonies, and the season’s flowers are preparing to emerge from their earthen winter beds. And, once again, baseball games are gracing diamonds across the country.”

“Yes, it’s wonderful,” said Football Coach. “Spring is my favorite time of the year. I wish football was played in the spring like baseball.”

“My opinion is that every outdoor sport should be played in the spring,” said Soccer Coach.

Baseball Coach was determined to make sure that springlike weather hung around all year long. “”Let’s just try thinking spring all year long and see what happens,” he said.

All three coaches began thinking about a perpetual spring and, for a few short weeks, their plan seemed to be working.

Before very long, however, the inevitable happened. Temperatures began soaring into the upper 80s, then the lower 90s, then the upper 90s.

Finally, Baseball Coach, Football Coach and Soccer Coach were forced to admit the obvious. “Summer has arrived, foiling our dreams of a perpetual spring,” said Football Coach.

“We should have realized that God controls the seasons,” said Baseball Coach. “And He alone determines when each season arrives. And when it ends.”

“That’s right,” agreed Soccer Coach. “But it still doesn’t hurt to dream, so I’ll probably continue to dream of a perpetual spring.”

“Me, too,” said Baseball Coach. “But I plan to dream with my eyes open. I don’t want to take a chance on missing anything.”

“I don’t think we’ll miss a thing,” replied Football Coach.

“God gave us four specific seasons. He gave us heat and cold, rain and snow. He also places His rainbow in the sky as a reminder of His covenant with man to never again destroy the earth by flood.

“He gave us loving families and friends. Plus, He loved us enough to send His son, Jesus Christ, into the world, to save us from our sins.”

“That’s right,” agreed Soccer Coach. “And by now I think we can all agree on one thing.”

“You’re so observant, Soccer Coach,” said Baseball Coach. “And I know what it is. No matter what season it is, it’s always the right time to ‘play ball!’ Especially if it’s baseball.”

“Make that football,” said Football Coach.

“Soccer!,” yelled Soccer Coach.

“I love fishing, too,” said Baseball Coach.

“Me, too,” said Soccer Coach.

“I say we take a week off from all the other sports for a seven-day fishing trip,” said Baseball Coach.

“Amen,” said Football Coach. “That’s the best idea you’ve had all day!”
