FIDES ET RATIO

FIDES ET RATIO

BRIEF CRITICAL COMMENT ON THE COLLECTION

“THE POEMS OF SUNDAY”

BY ROBERTO BENATTI

"Fides et ratio binae quasi penee videntur quibus veritatis ad contemplationem hominis attollitur animus"

“Faith and Reason are like the two wings with which the human spirit rises towards the contemplation of truth.”

(Incipit of the encyclical Fides et ratio)

Fides et ratio (in Italian, Faith, and Reason) is an encyclical letter published by Pope John Paul II on 14 September 1998.

(WIKIPEDIA)

Roberto Benatti is the complete hypostasis of the Wojtyłian encyclical in all its parts. Since Roberto Benatti’s profession of Catholic belief, Fides originates from an intimate, tetragonal conviction. A declaration of Catholic faith that he passed on as a catechesis of life to his family, making it a social paradigm of reference for other faithful. RB walks every day in the direction of improvement, on a path that leads to the perfect Christian. He works a lot on himself, giving topical relevance to his faith. Orthodox observant of the evangelical precepts, he desires to improve the society in which he lives by becoming increasingly an apostle from whom to draw vocational inspiration. Ratio, because from the Latin: reason, reasoning, intelligence, thought, intellect, discernment. Concepts, qualities inherent in the genotype, in the genetic heritage of Roberto Benatti, who reified them in his daily life and, particularly, in his engineering degree. The Latin “Ingĕnĭum,” engineering, ingenuity, intelligence, intuition, insight, talent, intellectual capacity. Rătĭo and Ingĕnĭum are two polysemantic Latin terms that combine well and blend well in these senses. Paraphrasing Pope John Paul II, Roberto Benatti is “the human spirit which, on two wings, rises towards the contemplation of the truth.” RB is a poet of excellent aesthetics, of unparalleled ethical inheritance, which, through poetry, has been successful and is successful in significantly plunging into his recesses. And it is in the abysses of him that the poet has found an unexpected universe, by which to understand, from which to draw responsible awareness and excited anxieties, vivid sensations and stimulating perceptions that, without poetry, would never have manifested on the surface. Religious devotion conveyed the poet towards analogical parallelism between poetry and New Testament doctrine, indirectly making the Apostolus Gentium, the Apostle of the Gentiles, Paul of Tarsus, alive and once again present:

"Littera enim occidit, spiritus autem vivificat"

“The letter kills; the spirit instead vivifies.”

(Second letter to Corinthians 3, six)

With this definition, Paul wanted to support the pre-eminence of the proclamation of Christ (built on the spirit, which is life) relating to Jewish law (which manifests itself as a written letter, which is, to say, external formalization). This Pauline phrase is commonly borrowed to oppose the exegesis ad litteram, coldly documentary of a text, the hermeneutics ad sensum of the hidden reflection in the discourse which, according to St. Paul, is the most trustworthy interpretation. R.B. affirms that re-reading a poem or an evangelical passage, at various times, in different psycho-existential conditions, he perceives additional messages, yet the texts are always the same. And it is in virtue of this perception, that the collection “The Poems of Sunday” is born, inspired by the Sunday liturgical calendar by its evangelical quintessence. At the end of the Sunday liturgy, a lay voice for the faithful, on the sidelines of the priestly one. A collection that emanates fragrances of mystical transcendence, which is of desire for God. The Church continually stimulates and rekindles the passion for God. Like a fire that needs new food, the desire of God needs to revitalize reasons, deep and vital, which insinuates it into the heart of man as an imperative requirement. In this regard, St. Augustine recited:

“You created us for You, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.”

(Confessions one, one; P.L. 32, 661)

Man needs to remember and to transit in some way in the itinerary of the messianic expectation: the lasting, calm, evening messianic vigil has given rise to religious manifestations of prayer, anticipation, of will, which reveal themselves to be of unparalleled splendor and in which the human soul, led by the Paraclete the Holy Spirit, spreads its most sublime, most devout, most painful, and most confident hatreds. The will of God, which will have its future fulfillment in Christ, fills this religious and historical path fantastically; the Church, during Advent, takes it up to reaffirm in people the dynamic in the direction of the Messiah, Emmanuel, God with us. And it is this filial love, full of hope, that permeates the collection of Roberto Benatti, a believer in Thomistic faith:

Quod non capis, quod non vides,

animósa firmat fides,

præter rerum órdinem.

What you don’t understand, what you don’t see,

a faith full of courage gives it for sure,

beyond the order of things.

From: Lauda Sion (Ecce Panis)

The Lauda Sion Salvatorem succession is identified in a prayer of Catholic custom. In it, following the praise of the Eucharist, the article of faith of transubstantiation is enunciated, and the accomplished presence of Christ in any species is clarified. The creator is St. Thomas Aquinas, who developed it around 1264 at the request of Pope Urban IV. It is recited or vocalized before the Gospel in the function of the feast of Corpus Domini. It is considered among the apexes of ecclesiastical versification for its didactic immensity and theological doctrine. R.B.’s poetry is about an iris flower, also called ireos. Christian iconography has assumed the rainbow flower as a tender mystical

symbol of faith, courage, and wisdom.

A tal proposito, S. Agostino recitava:
